How To Make Glass Blowing Tongs For Holding Hot Glass

To start off making your own hot glass tongs, you will need: Tongs, wire cutters, wire, scissors, plyers, and lathe tape.

1. First take your lathe tape and lay it over on of the arms of your tongs.
2. When you are satisfied with the length cut it, and make an second identical section
3. Take the two cut lengths of tape and fold them over the hands of your tongs. make to wrap the ends of the tape one over the other for the tightest possible fit.
4. Cut two lengths of wire that are long enough to wrap around each tong arm 4 or 5 times.
5. Secure the lathe tape to each tong arm with the wire using a twisty tie knot to finish.
6. Cut and clean any extra wire away using wire cutters and burn off any remaining fabric with a lighter or your torch.

Be sure to get a sturdy set of tongs. When the lathe tape wears down and starts falling off it is easy to repeat these steps and replace the old tape with new tape.
